Building momentum: highlights & key business updates
from Jason Woodward
The year began with great momentum for the Maitland Business Chamber and I’m pleased to share the progress building across our vibrant business community. It’s been a year marked by connection, collaboration, and the strengthening of our shared vision for a thriving local economy.
One of the most energising events on our calendar so far was our Women in Business 2025 breakfast. Held at the Maitland Regional Art Gallery, this sold-out event brought together an inspiring cross-section of women across industries, united by a passion for leadership and collaboration for our region. The energy in the room confirmed that this event continues to grow in impact and importance each year. With mentorship emerging as a key theme from the day, the Chamber is looking to explore future initiatives that support and foster mentor relationships within our business community.
A significant new addition to our calendar is the upcoming Lifeline Accidental Counsellor Workshop. This workshop has been designed in direct response to the rising awareness of psychosocial hazards in the workplace — an issue that is rapidly becoming one of the most pressing concerns for business owners and managers alike. Equipping our members with tools to have supportive conversations and navigate mental health challenges within their teams is not just thoughtful leadership — it’s essential. We encourage all businesses to consider this workshop as part of their core development strategy.
In February, we proudly represented our members at the Hunter Region Mayoral Luncheon, hosted by the Newcastle Business Club. With contributions from Dr Ross Kerridge, Lord Mayor of Newcastle; Adam Shultz, Mayor of Lake Macquarie; Leah Anderson, Mayor of Port Stephens; and our own Mayor Philip Penfold, each leader spoke candidly about the priorities and projects shaping their LGAs, from infrastructure to economic development and small business support. Holly Martin guided the conversation with clarity and purpose as MC, and it was a privilege to be in a room filled with engaged community leaders focused on building a prosperous region.
In recent weeks, the Chamber has established a valuable connection with the Hunter Region Tourism Organisation (HRTO), an independent not-for-profit that is gaining strong momentum in its mission to position the Hunter as a premier tourism destination. With the international upgrade at Newcastle Airport nearing completion, HRTO has shown great foresight in recognising the potential this brings for regional development and increased visitor interest. The organisation is focused on leveraging this opportunity to significantly boost the local tourism economy, and we look forward to seeing the positive outcomes that emerge from their efforts.
This month I also had the opportunity to attend the Business Hunter Economic Update, hosted in partnership with KPMG Australia. Dr Sherman Chan, Chief Economist at Business NSW, delivered a comprehensive analysis of the latest Business Conditions Survey data. The insights shared were particularly timely, unpacking the shifting economic pressures, emerging workforce trends, and the overall business sentiment across the Hunter and beyond. It was a reminder of the importance of informed, data-driven planning — and of the value of staying connected to the broader regional landscape through events like this.
Another strong focus for the Chamber this year has been ensuring our members are supported with the right tools and resources to navigate today’s business landscape. One key reminder: if you’re a member of the Maitland Business Chamber, make sure you’ve nominated to access the Business NSW Alliance benefits. This partnership provides valuable support, including advocacy, legal advice, and business resources tailored to help you stay informed and equipped for our fast-changing business climate.
As always, I want to thank our members — your engagement, feedback and support continue to shape the direction of the Chamber. Also a warm welcome to our newest members, Stepz Fitness, Pat Howard – On the Mic and Heather Van Galen – Associate Member. The second half of the year holds even more opportunity, and I look forward to seeing where we can go together.
If you are not yet a member, now may be the time to assess the benefits of connection and advocacy for our region. We encourage you to attend our next event to engage with the wider business community and experience the benefits.
